Day 6, NYC
5th Avenue New York City!!! Today we kicked up to New York City and JFP hit Manhattan on Saturday night in the belly of it all. We were hosted by a brilliant group of folks including New York Faith and Justice, Restore, Radical Living community, One House, All Angels Episcopal, and a bunch of other communities here. Many of these communities are linking up on our new website that is trying to connect the dots of all of these grassroots missional faith communities (communityofcommunities.us). During the intermission show, it was great to have the Stovepipes (who play the song on our website here) and Jonathan Wilson a poet (who wrote a special little ditty called “Jesus for President”).
Nearly every evening we meet up with friends whose scholarship, books, and lives we have deeply admired – tonight we met up with Lisa Sharon Harper, Jay Bakker from Revolution Church, and religious satirist Becky Garrison. And everywhere we go we meet up with ordinary radicals (what a blast to have a documentary film crew gathering their stories for their film – www.theordinaryradicals.com). Here’s one story from the road – a guy that attended our presentation shared that shortly after he became a Christian he went to the gameshow “The Price is Right” and they had him “Come-on-down”… so he did. And he won huge, that whole showcase showdown thing. And as a follower of the Jesus who said “sell what you have and give it to the poor”, he began to pray about what that meant for him. Before long he ended up in Africa, traveling to villages and giving away all his winnings. Not sure about how Bob Barker feels about that, but it had to make Jesus smile.
Momentum just keeps building, seems like the environment is ripe for a new conversation about politics in post-religious-right America. CNN has been following us. See what cha think: funny to see us on there http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/06/29/evangelical.campaign/. We’ve had journalists from all over trying to tell the story. Here’s a little piece from the Hartford newspaper that paved the way for us tomorrow. http://www.courant.com/features/lifestyle/hc-susan0622.artjun22,0,2747075.column

CNN just ran an article about your tour. I think it’s nothing short of awesome and inspirational. The CNN article actually made my heart skip a beat just to hear that other young evangelicals aren’t just voting right-wing over the common moral issues. Is there any way I can get involved??? Will you be touring out west? I can think of a metropolitan town that could use this revolution. Anyway, your team is definitely in my prayers.
Your brother in Christ,
Donny

I’m a Baptist pastor who’s excited about what you’re doing. I just looked at your schedule and saw that, at least according to what’s published, you’re not scheduled to come South. I live and work in Augusta, GA. What would it take to get y’all to come down here? You could also hit Atlanta, Charleston, Savannah, Columbia, SC, and other places while you’re in the area. You can contact me at the email address I provided.
Blessings to you!

A word from a young, equally disenchanted Evangelical:
Your message is spot on. Unfortunately it’s suffocating from the same self-righteousness that plagues current evangelicals. Your words drip with anger. Tell me more about what you’re for than what you’re against. Tell me about LOVE.

The poet is Jonathan Walton.

please do not assume the negativity with the following- I am the second return of christ- i deserve a chance to be heard as i have lived a full life with the love of christ since a child- i bring a gift- the solution to our energy crisis- I have done so with the manipulation of a man made LIGHTNING BOLT and WATER- over 13 months i try to stimulate a public to just repeast my experiment before our global economy fails and maybe war- there is no question m6 words will not be so “crazy” after a major war- I would like to uncover myself NOW- please tell someone-
solomon azar
solomon means peace
azar means fire in the first reliogen of the planet- zorasterian- and also the name of abrahams father-
http://www. noblefuse.com
i had enough- i have now endured over 13 months on this net being ignored or deleted by every arrogant organization such as myspace and “we can solve it dot org” etc etc run by humans and just regular folk like you who have always ignored my messages since my time upon the net-
WHY- because I introduce myself as a messenger of god- my free will to believe in my inner voice- your FREE WILL to ignore me even if I bring the gift of clean abundant energy to planet earth- Over 13 months as our soldiers fight for it- our planet dies by it- and our economy is about to collapse from it
well i am done with your stupidity-
let your oil prices go up- let your food prices go up- watch your economies crumble- see your jobs lost- get rid of all your pet animals as you cannot feed your family and pet dog as so many are giving them to the pound-
I have come openly with a solution 13 months ago only to be ignored-
now a gluttonous world playing on the internet shall all learn how primitive man is and must be civil to one another- instead of shunning someone bringing forth a solution- in the months to follow- you will learn there is no alternative fuel- panic mode will set in very soon-
when you understand clearly how important energy is- i guess your arragance will stop and just implement my scientific deeds - as for my messenger duties- it will make sense in time- all is well-
time will tell

Hey
I’m not sure who the Stovepipes are, but that song they’re playing is a Wilco song. Guthrie wrote the lyrics, but Wilco wrote the music.
